JH - In what ways does your Media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our video seems to develop conventions of real media products, however there are various parts of it that simply use and others that challenge the common conventions of this genre. Our genre is soft rock and the basic structure of our piece conforms to the normal and simple idea of cutting between a narrative and performance. However ideas within this have an individual meaning and when deconstructed can be easily identified.

• When applying Goodwins theory to our music video, it’s clear to see how various ideas supports this theory but also how certain parts challenge it.

• According to Goodwins theory, constantly, lyrics relate to the visuals in the track. Our video however, clearly challenges this theory as there is little relation between the two. The lyrics in our track are very obscure and could be interpreted in a number of different ways.

• The way we chose to interoperate and perform it meant that the visuals were more to do with our own ideas rather than in relation to the lyrics. We would instead use more shots of Edd looking depressed to enhance the mood of the video, rather than obscure images as shown on the left.

Goodwin also stated there is often a link between the timing of the music and visuals on screen. This is certainly apparent in our video and is used effectively to enhance the overall look and style of our video.

• There are various shots which cut in time to the music, especially in the opening scene. It is also evident in the number of shots involving the guitar which cut and are in time with the strum.

Goodwins theory also involved the notion of looking. This has been completely and purposely challenged in our video which in turn creates the interesting twist to our video. The generic pop or soft rock video may contain a girl in the narrative which involves the and in male gaze Goodwins theory presents the women as an object.

However in our video we chose to only including male characters in our narrative and therefore avoid conforming to typical conventions of this genre and challenging common ideologies. Instead by leaving out this mystery female character, we were able to use her existence as a twist at the end, showing this imaginary character to be dead when Edd visits the grave, and thus adding interest and narrative fuzz to our video.

We also felt this ending challenged certain theories, Adorno's espeically, in the sense that there is no happy ending and doesn't confrom to the mood of a lot of videos of the same genre and therefore doesn't conform to a pseudo individualised mass market.

When using semiotics to deconstruct our video we can see;

• There are a number of iconic signs used throughout. This includes the briefcase and umbrella that were used to connote a weekly routine and different days of the week which were business orientated.

• The rose was the main iconic sign towards the end of the video which has clear connotations of its own such as love and death which was perfect in context of our narrative and was self explanatory at the end when it was placed on Edd’s lovers grave.

• There is a lot of non verbal language used throughout the video which is used to signify the key emotions evident in the narrative which is loss and depression. This is used very effectively and therefore meant that we didn’t have to rely on the lyrics to tell the story.

• The idea of this introduces first person mode of address and leads on to Dyers Paradoxes. As a lot of this non verbal language relates to his gaze, it creates the idea that he is infact close to us and performing to us, however absent as the same time as we are not actually with him.

Postmodernism is often associated with a revolt against authority and signification and a tendency towards pastiche, parody, quotation, self-referentiality and eclecticism.

• Oli singing in church uses ideas of postmodernism in the sense relating to revolting against authority and signification. Although it’s not illegal or even a rebellious action, it is still an unusual action and certainly doesn’t represent religion in anyway.

• Performing in a church could be seen as rebelling against the mainstream ideas of what is acceptable and fashionable.

‘Pastiche, parody and quotation’ means that these texts often refer to, borrow from and sometimes just outright copy other older or contemporary texts.

• This is again is evident in our work with certain ideas used from contemporary texts such as a key sequence from ‘All American Rejects’ video – ‘Move Along’. We found this idea to be extremely effective through their video and so by using a similar idea in ours would do the same, and I feel it was successful.

Above shows the sceene from All American Rejects that was mentioned, and below is a clip of how we used that idea in our own work.

• This was also apparent in the performance side to our video in which we tried certain shots of Oli that were effective, in the video ‘For the first time’ by ‘The Script’.

The image on the right is from the actual video and the clip below shows how we used that idea in our own work.

• However ‘self-referentiality’ means that postmodern texts often refer to themselves – that is to say, that often these texts know they are texts and make fun of themselves.

• This proves that although our video contains aspects of postmodernism, it also contains a serious narrative which conveys a lot of feeling and emotion.

EU - Evaluation Questions

JH - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The combination of our main product and ancillary texts is extremely effective in terms of creating the correct image for the band relating to the genre of music. There is one key image that we used for one of our adverts and for the front of the digi-pack which reflects the ideas that went in to producing our main product and they are as follows.

Step 1 -

  • Firstly there are obvious linguistic signs embedded in this cover, one of which is his name, Boyce Avenue, at the top of the cover and secondly is Drops of Jupiter. This of course you can't see in the video.
  • There are also a number of iconic signs included which consists of the photo in general which denotes him standing holding a rose. His clothing in general and the rose itself are shown in both the video and print work. However in the image the head has been cropped out and therefore no facial expression it opposes breaking the forth wall and first person mode of address. This of course is not the case in the video and the use of first person mode of adress is extremely well used.
  • In the print work the font is also included in this and how it is positioned. The name of the band is in the biggest font, followed by the name of the album underneath. This allows you to start at the top of the cover and follow his name down to the album name and to finish with the picture. The font seems to be of an original and authentic design and in white, matching the other strong bold and basic colours of the cover.
  • This authenticity is reflected in the video, as are the colours in terms of the costumes involved as he is wearing plain suits throughout.
  • The other images in the digipack, aswel as Olis advert work well in terms of creating an authentic band image. Olis advert is more revealing and suits the genre of the music and video better. The image of a street in london is also extremely effective and works well with the video as it highlights the genreal location of where the narritve was shot.
  • There are no non - representational graphic signs in the printwork or the video.

Step 2 -

  • The overall image combined with the text adds to the stars meta-narrative and seems to be telling his own story. The idea of him standing in a suit holding a rose connotes that there is a specific event and reason for this. This may be a wedding, however due to the black suit and fact that he is holding a rose of all flowers makes it more likely to be a funeral or something associated with death.
  • The video confirms these ideas and therfore works well with the ancillary texts in this perspective.
  • In the print work there is little non-verbal language, however from what we can see it suggests he is slightly anxious and expresses a degree of uncertainty due to one hand being in his pocket and the fact he is holding the rose close to his chest could show it is sentimental to him. The lack of first person mode of address again opposes Dyers paradoxes. As there is no gaze it seems like he is only absent to us and rather than creates this paradox, creates a feeling of mystery. This is also evident in Oli's advert where his face cannot be seen either.
  • This however is juxtaposed with the video as Dyers paradoxes are extremely apparent in it, with use of first person mode of address and the gaze.
  • This idea of juxtaposition could work well in terms of the mystery from the anxillary texts, which draws in the user making them want to watch the music video, intruiged to see what it is really about.

Step 3-

  • There are certain social myths and ideologies present in the print work and video that may appear subtle but do connote some meaning. Firstly his clothing is of an important nature as he is wearing a smart suit and tie connoting a sign of wealth and style. This could reinforce the common ideology of pop stars being wealthy and therefore being able to afford the latest fashion trends whether it be clothing or accessories to add to their star image, however due to the images mystery is unknown as to whether the man in hand is actually from the band.
  • The artist however perfoming in the video and also the man walking away in Oli's advert is obviously from the band and his clothes certainly do support the band image.
  • The colours in the cover add to the authentic nature being fairly bland and plain, which could signify the unhappy and seriousness of the event in question. The rose being the only object in colour allows it to stand out in the centre of the picture suggesting its importance and meaning.

Step 4-

  • This overall image of style, star quality and wealth is attractive to many of a particular audience. This image however doesn’t relate to the genre of music which would be seen as slightly more casual, but at the same time the smart and stylistic image in hand may encourage people not only to buy in to his music but also to feel like they are buying in to his image when purchasing his album.
  • This star quality is shown to the left as Oli is performing.
  • This creates a strong indexical sign and due to the overall representation of fashion, trend and good taste may encourage audiences to believe that by listening to his music and buying his albums allows the artist and fan to connect and share similar values and beliefs as well as the style and image that is signified.

JH - How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

During our planning and research stages we used various media technologies to enable us to carry out and complete tasks in a quick and efficient manner.

YouTube was the first media technology we called upon which allowed us to research a number of videos to get an idea of certain shots, lighting and costumes that we may choose to use in our own video.

In this stage I found the video ‘All she wrote’ by Ross Copperman to be useful in terms of certain shots and lighting used in the performance side to the video. YouTube allowed me to not only look at this video but many others of a similar style and genre and search and develop ideas to use in our own work.

We then used Blogger to post this information and then comment on each others posts, allowing us to discuss ideas as a group and show each other our findings. This was an extremely useful technology all the way through the project in terms of combining and developing all of our ideas and posting any tiny amount of information in seconds somewhere all of our group could see it.

When it came to the main research stage of collecting ideas other than our own and getting useful feedback which could influence our decisions when creating our video, we used Survey Monkey.

This site allowed us to construct a number of questions and post them on the site in a survey format, enabling us to send the link to whoever we wanted to answer them. These sorts of question included ‘ do you think our video would stand up to repeatability?’ and ‘what location would you prefer to see in our performance?’.

The feedback we got from this was extremely beneficial and allowed us to make important decisions that we may not have thought of making without these responses.

We also used Facebook to paste the survey monkey link in the hope that a number of young adults and teens may choose to answer our questions, which was of course our target audience.

This proved successful as the majority of people who answered our questions accessed the site via Facebook and answered them with a similar opinion which is exactly what we wanted.

We then used Powerpoint to create a pitch using different slides to present different planned aspects of our video. This was useful as it was used as another form of feedback from another group of people. This was then transferred to Slideboom, which allowed our presentation to be viewed with ease and efficiency.

During the construction process media technologies were also used. We used the programme Premier 8.0 to construct our video. This was used to upload footage we had previously shot on HD cameras which were extremely efficient in capturing the shots we needed.

Once the shots had been captured we could upload them to premier where not only did we cut and edit all the footage together but we also used a number of technological techniques to enhance our work.

• I used certain tools on Premier to improve the overall look of our work and this included adding filters to both the narrative and performance side of the video. I added a blue wash filter to the narrative side to convey a feeling of coldness and isolation which seemed to work well. The filter I added to the performance side was more of an orange/red wash which connoted a feeling of warmth which again was effective.

This is an example of filters off:

This is an example of the filters we used on:

• Other effects we used involved adjusting the speed of shot settings which meant we sped up a long shot of Edd standing still which meant all the traffic and people around him would move and change extremely quickly. This effect connoted a feeling of alienation and loneliness showing Edd to stand out from the crowd and not being able to function properly with every day life.

• The opposite effect to this was when we included shots of Edd walking in slow motion, but the most effective of these was the shot of him on London Bridge walking through a crowd of people. The slow motion allowed us to pay attention to detail to the non verbal language which really signified depression. This shot was an idea we got from a video called ‘Gotta Be a Way’ by Bluey Robinson and proved to be an effective shot in both videos.

We used the programme Photoshop to create our print work which included two adverts and a digipack. For my advert I produced a picture of Edd in a suit holding a rose with surrounding text of the name of the band and album. For my advert i used various tools on Photoshop to create an effective final design.

• Firstly I had to take the picture of Edd in a suit holding the rose, both of which we felt were obvious visual signifiers of a funeral, but more importantly death.

• Once I had opened the picture on to Photoshop I turned the picture of Edd in to black and white, leaving the rose he was holding as bright red to stand out.

• I then cut out the outside of the background, leaving only what was behind Edd in the picture which happened to be church doors. After this I replaced the removed background with a black layer.

• I then used the gradient tool to blend together the new black layer and the remaining background which left a dark shadowing effect.

• I then decided to crop Edd’s head out the image to create a sense of mystery to the design which we all agreed looked better.

• Finally all that was left was to add the text of both the name of the band and album and additional album information. For the two larger texts I used a font from the site ‘DAFONT.COM’ which I decided had a look of authenticity and style which I thought suited the overall band image.

• This font was placed at the top of the page and followed down to the image, with attention to the rose and finally to the smaller text of the album information, making use of the rule of thirds. This is shown by the image on the right.

During the Evaluation stages I used similar tools as in the planning stages to complete the project. Blogger was again used to post our video and print work and receive feedback, as was YouTube.

We again used Survey Monkey to create another survey and again as another method of receiving feedback for our work. This link was again posted on Facebook to gain responses from our large demographic target audience of teenagers and young adults.

OH-Evaluation: How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

Evaluation

For the research part of our project, I used mainly YouTube, so that I could find videos by artists from the same genre as our chosen song, and deconstruct them in a way which would be advantageous in finding out how these videos have constructed meaning and how they allow the viewer to relate to the track threw more than the lyrics.

I found a very useful video to be “Many of Horror- Biffy Clyro” which became very useful in the performance part of our video, it showed us some good conventions and shots that can be applied into our performance.

This inspired me to put a show similar to one that they had in their video because I believed that it would be very effective in our video. It’s a MCU with a light in the background, to some extent silhouetting me as the artist, which has been very effective.

After I had found out about the tracks though and had posted a entrance on the blog using blogger, I was also able to get a bit of feed back from the other members of the group to see if they agreed with the information I had found out and to see whether they thought we could implement my research into our video.

During the planning stage of the project, a fair few more media technologies were used, due to the fact that this was more about presenting our work, for example the pitch and audience research.

To gather information for audience research the tool we used was survey monkey, this allowed us to create a questionnaire that would be appropriate for the questions that we wanted to ask, such as “would you watch the video again” to see if it would stand up to repeatability for example, and it was also easy way to view the results on a chart.

We then posted the survey on Facebook which allowed us to get feedback from people of our own age, a key demographic in the market that we would have been aiming our product for.

Once we had this information we constructed our pitch, we did this using Power Point, in this we listed the usual things that were needed to be seen for our video to be allowed to be signed off, such as locations, meis-en-scene and appropriate presentation of our audience research.

We then uploaded this to slideboom which allowed us to make a link of our pitch slides into a page by page “document” which allowed people to view our slides easily, so it looked far more presentable.

For the construction of our video we used windows premier 8.0, this allowed us to use high quality video footage, far better quality than we had last year. It also allowed us to experiment with different depths of field when it came to the focussing of our show, although we didn’t find this very effective for our video.

This program allowed us to add filters and other effects to our finished product which allowed us to make a more professional looking video.

We added a orange filter to the performance to give a more authentic and brighter performance which we thought would add authenticity to the performance. However we used a blue wash on the narrative of our video to further connote sadness and loneliness to the actor’s performance.

We did this by putting all of the narrative on the video one line and all of the performance on the video 2 line, this allowed us to select all the narrative, and all the performance and add the filters we wanted to.

For the Digipack and Adverts we used Photoshop. This allowed us to upload images we had taken and edit them in a way we thought was appropriate to give us the ability to construct the image that we wanted for the artist.

I used many different tools in Photoshop. For my advert I used the blur tool a lot. I used this to blur out the whole of the background to make me as the artist stand out in the advert, which I think draws more attention to the artist.

For the font I used the same font that Jack had used in his advert. However the text didn’t stand out quite as much as I wanted it too, so to correct this I created a replicated layer of the text and made the text grey, I placed that under the original text and moved it three pixels down and to the right, which overcame the problem.

The final tool I used in photo shop was when it came to adding the stars for the five star rating. I did this by finding an image of a star in the images box, copying it four times so I had five of them, aligning them all and making them the same size.

I think all of these techniques were very effective in the making of my advert, and although not too many massive techniques were used in the editing except for slowing and speeding up time and also the filters we added, I think that the video and the ancillary texts have become very effective in the construction of the artists image.

During the evaluation, the tools I used were blogger, putting up posts with images to make the blog more astetically pleasing and to help understand the text more.

OH-Evaluation: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Evaluation

I believe that the combination of our main product, digipack and adverts combine nicely to create the artists image.

However I think in this genre of music that the artist’s image is constructed differently than that of a more commercial mainstream artist. Even though our artist’s music could be considered fairly generic, there’s something about this type of music which is more genuine.

I believe this is down to the fact that it’s just an artist and a guitar singing about their emotions. However some People may think that a CU shot of the artist may be more appropriate such as Jason Mraz, so that it shows his emotions more.

However I believe that our shot is good due to the fact that since the artist is walking away in connotes the artists loneliness, while at the same time showing his guitar, showing he is a talented singer song writer.

This works very well from our point of view due to the fact that this is the image that we wanted to portray for our artist via the use of our ancillary texts.

Even though the artists image that we have made isn’t that generic compared to other artists in this genre, the main product and ancillary text’s go very well together to produce the image that we were trying to portray.

However going by Dyres critical theory that fundamentally a stars image is incoherent and "open". Dyre sais this is because of two key paradoxes. That the artist must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary whilst being present and absent to maintain their star image, this is what makes the consumer want to come back again and again to consume a similar product from the star because they never entirely forefil there need to understand or feel close to the star. I don’t think that our product and ancillary text’s particularly convey this image about our artist.

I believe this because I think we have combined our texts to convey an image of a normal person, who is going through a sad time of their life. Who is very talented at singing and playing the guitar. However I can see how people could interpret this type of artist to conform to Dyre's theory due to the fact that they are very naturally tallented and people apreciate raw tallent and want to consume more of it.

The general darkness of the digipack and the advert of a man in a suit, portraying a darker image, connoting depression which ties in well with the narrative of our video.

OH-Evaluation: In what ways does your Media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Evaluation.

I believe our product is generic of the genre of soft rock by the way that the video conforms to the normal narrative cut between a performance piece.

This general structure of a music video would conform to adornos critical theory that all videos are pseudo individualised and mass media makes them convey the same thing to appeal to a large audience for mass profit.

Such as “Jason Mrazs - I’m Yours” which shows an idealistic lifestyle, such as panning shots of vast amazing landscapes and CU shots of him smiling and having fun with friends, these are all very conventional shots and follow the genre characteristics of this type of music.

But our video, I believe breaks with this critical theory due to the fact that the narrative breaks the conventional idea that the singer song writers video will end up with a happy ending or sings about a happy situation about how he/she is happy and comfortable in there life.

We can see this from the CU shots of the actor in the narrative, looking sad and showing negative and sad body language threw out which is an unconventional emotion to see in this general genre of music.

However our videos twist is in the narrative, the actor ends up in a grave yard, which obviously brings severe connotations of death and loss, this intertwined with the general tone and lyrics of the song portrays the idea that the actor has lost someone very close, and the red rose could be further showing connotations of who it may be, a possible lover.

So this is a reason how our video doesn’t conform to the pseudo individualised mass market that the song, (in other hands) may be intended for.

However it does appeal to a big market but in a different way, this is due to the fact that the performance by the artist and the actor in the narrative makes the artist seem “sensitive” this will definitely appeal to a large demographic such as teenagers and young adults, which is what our target audience was intended to be from the start.

I believe that our video is fairly obvious as to what’s happening and the general mood is it being very emotional, sad and to an extent depressing is shown threw out.

From this I can make the assumption that it conforms to Stuart Hall’s critical theory of being encoded and decoded by the audience. So in this aspect our video conforms to the genre, by which I mean most soft rock videos are encoded to give, normaly a happy mood to them, such as “Paulo Nutini-Candy” which can easily be decoded by an audience. Even though ours gives a mostly sad deconstruction by the audience.

In conclusion I believe that our video challenges Adornos critical theory by the use of the darker narrative that we have used, however it conforms to Stuart Halls theory of being encoded, and decoded by an audience of being obviously depressing because of the meis-en-scene connoting the actor has lost someone close to him.
